You read that right! New Year’s resolutions are done; they’re out and we’re on to something better! Before you let your thoughts spiral into a endless lists of reasons you need to make your New Year’s resolutions for the coming year, let’s talk about why we don’t need them!
reasons we’re ditching resolutions
So, I’ll go ahead and tell you, you’re free to do whatever you want. You know this of course. You can pull out your phone and head to your notes and create a list of New Year’s resolutions. There’s no hard feelings and you should trust the process that works for you. However, let me tell you why you should save yourself the time.
well, the numbers don’t lie
If you had to guess, how many people do you think actually complete the resolutions that they set for themselves? According to the Fisher College of Business, it’s a whooping 9%. That’s it. Furthermore, their research showed that about 23% quit by the end of the first week and 43% quit by the end of January. Add to all of this, failing at your New Year’s resolutions can be make you feel worse. It’s a hit to your self-esteem and can be very depressing & we don’t need that!
Based on their research, they also found out that there are usually 4 reasons why people don’t complete their New Year’s Resolutions:
- Your goal setting is simply tied to tradition and not the actual need for change.
- You aren’t managing expectations.
- You’re biting off more than you can chew.
- There’s no accountability.
Essentially, it takes way more than just writing down a New Year’s resolution to make a resolution happen. If you’re still with me, you’re probably thinking “Okay, so what’s the alternative?”
introducing, the uber list!
If you haven’t heard of an über list, you’re not alone! I discovered the concept last year but it has made going into the new year less stressful and anxiety ridden. So, what is an über list? I first heard of the uber list from I Saw What You Did, hosted by Danielle Henderson & Millie De Chirico. Danielle credits Nikol Lohr, author of The Thrifty Knitter, as the originator of this concept.
How It Works: To make an uber list of your own, you simple take the last two digits of the current year (e.g. the 23 of 2023) and you add 100. You then will proceed to make a list of 123 things you would like to get done in the coming year.
You might be thinking that I’m a complete clown for asking you to dump the concept of making 1-2 resolutions for a list of over 100, but bear with me. The things on your list don’t have to be massive projects. For example, I have “clean out my care every month” and “plan a surprise outing with a friend” on my list. Simple, enjoyable, and easy!
I also want to add two notes about the uber list. First, it’s totally okay if you don’t manage to get around to doing everything on your list. I didn’t get everything done on my list from last year and decided to just roll those things over onto my list for this year. This made making my list this year go by just a bit faster! Second, this list is for you. If you decide to do this with a group, feel free to keep some (or the entire list) entries to yourself!
I love the concept of creating an uber list because it allows me to break down my goals into much smaller chunks, which of course makes achieving them much easier. Better yet, there’s no pressure to do run yourself ragged trying to get everything on your list done. New year, less stress, happier you!
Did you make an uber list? I’d love to hear what you’re most excited about accomplishing!
